Halal is an Arabic word meaning “lawful” or “permitted.” The Arabic word with the opposite meaning of halal is haram, which means “unlawful” or “prohibited.” These terms are generally used to describe something that a Muslim is permitted to eat, drink, or use. Whether a product can be deemed halal depends primarily on two variables: the source of the ingredients and the status of the production equipment. IFANCA halal certification takes both criteria into consideration when determining whether a product meets halal requirements.
